America's Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 3 - 12. The purpose is simply to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with peers.

    A student participates by reading from the book list provided for that year's coaches. Students may count books they have ready before. However, they cannot count books that they have only seen on video. They must read the book. They should keep a summary so they can review this information before their school and county battles.

    A typical "battle" is a full day tournament or game, like Family Feud, in which students' teams earn points by answering questions about the books on the book list. A typical competition day begins with a meeting in the gym, a morning snack, and directions for the day. Then they are assigned their schedule and sent to their first round of the "Battle." They play several rounds, each against a different team. At the end of the morning, points are totaled and the team with the most points wins.

    Battles are usually held in May of the school year. The only cost is $10.00 for the T-Shirt.
