  • What is the Berkeley County Schools’ Pre-Kindergarten Program?

    The Berkeley County Schools’ Pre-K Program is designed to develop children's social and emotional growth by offering a range of experiences based on early learning standards. Pre-K offers a balance of activities, including active and quiet times, large and small group activities, center times, indoor and outdoor playtimes, and child-initiated and teacher-planned activities. Berkeley County Pre-K Programs use Creative Curriculum. Information about Creative Curriculum can be found on the Pre-K website.

  • Who can participate?

    To attend Berkeley County Schools’ Pre-K, children must be **four years old by June 30, 2023** for the 2023-24 enrollment year and reside in Berkeley County. Children enrolled in participating child-care centers in Berkeley County who reside in another West Virginia County may participate if space is available.

  • When can I enroll my child?

    Online enrollment for 2023-2024 Pre-K School year will be available on this website beginning March 1, 2023.

    Appointments will not be scheduled. This is not a first come first serve program. All applications from March 2023-May 2023 will be enrolled under the same criteria.

  • What documents will I need for online enrollment?

    All documents will need to be uploaded or if unable to upload, contact 304-267-3510 ext. 13016

    1. State Birth Certificate (A county birth certificate will not be accepted)

    2. Social Security Card or Number, there will be an area in the online registration to enter the number

    3. ***Updated immunization/ shot records. Registration for the student will not be considered without the immunization/ shot records

    4. Physical form filled out by the doctor

    5. Dental form filled out by the doctor

    6. Proof of income

  • What to expect for Pre-K Placement Process

    All site placements will be confirmed by August 11, 2023 by either a phone call or email from someone in the Pre-K Department.

    Placement criteria include: home school district for general education students; students with specialized needs least restrictive environment; before and after care needed; income; transportation; previous students in Pre-K; siblings in current school setting with Pre-K programs 

    Confirmation of site times, orientations and the first day of school will be available when you receive your contact for placement.

    All sites are full day. A Pre-K school calendar will be distributed and be available on the Pre-K website in August 2023.

    An email will be sent to the email address that you provided if your application is missing documentation required for enrollment.

  • What is the adult to student ratio?

    The classroom maximum is 20 children with a minimum of two (2) adults per class. Each classroom has at least one teacher and one teaching assistant. Classroom ratios may be lower for children with specialized services.

  • Where are the Pre-K Programs?

    Berkeley County Schools’ Pre-K Programs are found in 69 classrooms throughout Berkeley County. Classrooms are located in 36 sites including Berkeley County Schools, Head Start classrooms, and in collaborative partner programs. Students will be placed in a program and parents will be notified prior to August 11th.

  • What does it cost?

    Berkeley County Schools’ Pre-K Program is provided at no cost to families. Breakfast and lunch are served during a school day. Breakfast and lunch charges may apply if the student does not qualify for free or reduced meals. Children enrolled in a school may pack their breakfast or lunch. Children enrolled in childcare centers must follow the guidelines set forth by the center.

  • What about transportation?

    Families provide transportation to childcare collaboration sites and school sites. Transportation is sometimes provided through Head Start partnerships and is provided for students who qualify for Pre-K specialized services.

  • What are the program hours?

    Pre-K runs 6 to 6.5 hours per day. Berkeley County Schools’ Pre-K follows a calendar similar to the Berkeley County Schools’ calendar, however Pre-K will have at least one professional development day monthly with no student attendance, but programs will be offered for family engagement on those days. A calendar of days attending and days not attending will be available to families in August 2023.
